What is an ESTA?

The ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a mandatory pre-travel authorization for citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries travelling to the United States by air or sea. It is not a visa — it is an electronic authorization linked to your passport number, valid for 2 years with unlimited entries.

Dutch citizens, along with passport holders from most other EU countries, require an ESTA for every trip to the US. The authorization must be in place before you board your flight or cruise ship — airlines verify it at check-in. An ESTA covers tourism, business visits, and transit, with a maximum stay of 90 days per visit.

Applying online takes about 10 minutes. You fill in your passport details, answer a short questionnaire about your travel history and background, and pay the fee. Most applicants receive their ESTA within minutes; complex cases can take up to 72 hours. Keep a copy of your authorization reference number — you may need it at the border.

Questions about ESTA

Who needs an ESTA?
Citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries visiting the US for tourism, business, or transit for up to 90 days without a visa. The Netherlands is a VWP country, so Dutch passport holders must have a valid ESTA before boarding any flight or cruise to the United States.
Do Dutch citizens need an ESTA to travel to the USA?
Yes. All Dutch passport holders travelling to the United States by air or sea need a valid ESTA. It must be obtained before you board — airlines will check your authorization at check-in. The ESTA is not required for travel to the US by land from Canada or Mexico.
How much does an ESTA cost?
The US government charges a fee of $21. EasyVisaHelp converts this at a fixed rate and charges €37 as the government fee component, plus a service fee of €29 for application review and submission support — bringing the total to €66. There are no hidden costs: both fees are shown separately before you pay.
How long does ESTA approval take?
Most ESTA applications are approved within 72 hours, and the majority are approved within minutes. In rare cases processing can take longer. Apply at least 3 days before your departure to avoid last-minute issues.
How long is an ESTA valid?
An ESTA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each stay may not exceed 90 days. You can make multiple trips to the US on a single ESTA during its validity period.
What if I get a new passport?
You need a new ESTA linked to your new passport, even if your previous ESTA is still within its 2-year validity. Your old ESTA is tied to your old passport number and is no longer valid once you travel on the new passport.
Can my ESTA application be denied?
Yes. Common reasons include a criminal record, prior immigration violations in the US, travel to certain countries, or errors in the application. If your ESTA is denied, you will need to apply for a US visa at the nearest American consulate. EasyVisaHelp reviews your application before submission to minimize the risk of errors.
Can I work in the US with an ESTA?
No. An ESTA only permits tourism, business visits (meetings, conferences), and transit. For employment you need a work visa such as an H-1B or L-1.
What is the difference between EasyVisaHelp and the official ESTA website?
The official website (esta.cbp.dhs.gov) charges only the government fee of $21. EasyVisaHelp charges an additional service fee for form review and submission support. Both result in the same official ESTA issued by US Customs and Border Protection.
