What is a Canada eTA?
The Canada eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to Canada. It is electronically linked to your passport and must be obtained before boarding your flight — airlines verify it automatically at check-in.
Dutch citizens are among the many nationalities required to have an eTA for air travel to Canada. A single eTA is valid for up to 5 years (or until your passport expires) and allows multiple stays of up to 6 months each. If you enter Canada by land from the United States, the eTA is not required.
The application takes about 5 minutes. Most applicants receive approval within minutes of submitting. In rare cases processing can take a few days, so apply before your trip. The eTA is linked electronically to your passport — you do not receive a physical document to carry.
